What is a 3 Carat Diamond?

A 3 carat diamond is a lovely weight for an engagement ring. While not the only factor to take into account when buying a diamond they remain one of the four aspects which make up ‘The four C’s’ because they measure each in a different way to assess the overall quality and worth of the diamond. All measure different things when it comes to quality and value, carat is the most popular but "The Four C's". So three would add up to 200mg, a standard around one carat!

How Much Does a 3 Carat Diamond Ring Price?

A 3 carat diamond can cost from $19,000 to $100,000. If you know, this is a big price range, but diamond price depends heavily on the stone quality. But if you’re dead set on having a 3 carat diamond, a lab grown may be a better buy, quality-wise and cost-wise; up to 30% less than what you will pay for an earth grown diamond.

Diamonds are graded on the following characteristics: The four Cs—cut, carat, color, and clarity (or the 4Cs). And here’s a rough breakdown of how some of these attributes affect a three carat diamond ring.

Carat

The head of a thumbtack is about three carat the size of a ring, which rings differ for each cut. A three carat diamond ring is big by anyone’s standards! Rings are around 0.25 – 1.5 carats or sometimes even 3 carats, but 3 carats is really spectacular.

Color

Diamonds come in all colors: blue, yellow, red, purple, white, green, pink, brown, orange, and black. This is true of even all of the available colors, as the most valued diamonds are colorless ones.

The scale for color grading shows how colorless a diamond is. Diamonds and gemstones are graded by GIA’s scale for color. The scale ranges from D-Z. That said the most labs follow this classification and so a D graded diamond is your best option.

D and E grade diamonds are very rare; less than 1% of all diamonds mined are grade D or E. Even rarer are diamond roughs that can be used to cut a three-carat diamond.

While colorless diamonds are preferred, 3 carat diamond rings in the G- I range, will freely reflect light and will pass as colorless as well.

Cut

We’ve talked about the cut of a three carat diamond and it’s really important. It can make the size (visual display) change of the diamond making it look bigger or smaller than others based on the specifications. Each has its own, unique, characteristics, so selecting a diamond shape purely means it's personal choice. Some people prefer rings with a particular diamond shape, but this is purely a matter of what the buyer likes.

What Does a 3 Carat Diamond Ring Cost?

The amount of money you pay for a three carat ring depends on the four C’s. But three carat diamonds should begin at $10,000 in theory. The diamond gets increased in price as the cut and clarity improve. VVS2 is ideally the clarity (clean diamonds are pretty expensive) and the round cut is almost usually the costliest cut.

A good quality diamond would on the average $40,000-$50,000. Here, you’d be able to pick up a 3.01 carat, VS2 excellent, round diamond as a solitaire setting. Consider the following price differentials to illustrate this point* (Round diamond sample prices as of 2024):

Natural Mined - G, VS1, Excellent:

  • 1 carat: $6,000

  • 2 carats: $30,000
