5 Carat Diamond Rings: Your Guide to Quality, Pricing and More

Reaction often is a simple but powerful ‘wow’—with 5-carat diamonds. It's not just a whole bigger step, it’s a huge leap of extraordinary beauty and rarity into a whole other world. If one can afford such a beautiful stone to consider, the nuances of cut, color, and clarity become even more important to understand. An acquisition is what a five carat high quality diamond is, elegance, a luxury of a symbol and an item that can never be seconded by any other in terms of beauty.

A 5 carat diamond ring will make a statement with your ring — such as engagement, designer, cocktail. A ring with 5 carat diamond will be a ring people will want to see and discuss! Picking a poor quality stone will leave you feeling disappointed with something that looks more like a boulder than a diamond.

What is the Size of a 5 Carat Diamond Ring?

A 5 carat diamond will be different sizes depending on its shape. For example a Round diamond should be about 11.1 mm in diameter. A 1 carat Round diamond will have a diameter of 6.5mm so this will appear twice as big. But don’t be fooled. You can really see the doubling of size, on a finger probably the most.

Carat Weight vs Total Carat Weight

In truth, total carat weight and the carat weight of a diamond individually, is a large disparity.

If you have to add all the diamonds’ carats together when you go to calculate the total carats on your ring, you know you’re taking the carats of all of them together.

For instance, if your diamond engagement ring band features ten 0.1 carat diamonds and you have a solitaire diamond center stone weighing 1 carat — you’d have a total carat weight of 2 carats. Buying a 5 Carat diamond ring comes with a second set of criteria to consider other than what you'd expect. There are two big things that you need to consider when buying a 5 carat diamond ring: the 4Cs, and the particular dilemmas which arise with each diamond cut.

Colour

When you’re going to buy a 5 carat diamond ring you don’t want to stand for nothing less than the best the eyes can see. At large carat sizes, color becomes more apparent as well.

Therefore, it is greatly recommended that if the diamond is coloured between D-E-F (excluding those below 2 carat), it should be bought. Below that and you’ll find yourself seeing the diamond begin to yellow, brown and gray.

If you’re looking for a coloured stone, then the 4Cs don’t work in the same way it does on an icy white diamond. Instead, hue, tone and saturation comprise the core elements in which GIA grades coloured stones.

Cut

The cut is bigger than it seems. All the major individual gemologists will grade a Round diamond only on cut. This is because the other shapes don't have an independent measure of what's ideal, and that's what the difference is.

If you’re buying a Round cut diamond, I’d suggest buying an ideal, excellent and excellent diamond. This is the best Round cut diamond you can buy today. It is close to perfect in symmetry, the proportions are just right for light to be reflected and the diamond is well polished.

  • Check its proportions,

  • Visually inspect it

  • Grading Certificate - check the diamond against.

The following example is an example where not looking at more than grading reports would have you pick a badly cut diamond. The one on the left has significantly more light performance than the one on the right.

Clarity

Presence of inclusions or blemishes in or on the diamond is what we call clarity. The more diamond size, the more attention you need to pay to the clarity. Why? Bigger diamonds will reflect more light. That means that you can see inclusions and blemishes more easily.

It is recommended to use VS1 and above at 5 carat. It's included but not noticeably so at 10x magnification, so the diamond is apparently flawless to the naked eye. Whatever you decide, your diamond shouldn’t have any visible marks, blemishes or scratches. The problem arises when you are getting a diamond from a wholesale site like Novita , because you can easily buy the less than perfect stone (as long as the stone is certified with good diamonds) as for all the aspects of choosing the best diamond your eye can see, and they aren’t listed on the certification. It can be time consuming to pick your own diamond, as there is a lot of technical jargon and it is a laborious process.

Carat

Depending on your budget, you may want to consider purchasing a diamond that falls within the upper range of G to J color grade diamonds that are 4.87 to 5.03 carat. Most of the time, smaller diamonds, although slightly below the naked eye from diamonds, can run for hundreds, or even thousands of dollars less. This is called ‘but shy’ in the jewelry industry.

Types of 5 Carat Diamonds

Different types of carat diamonds can make a difference:

  • The first is cut, which can either be brilliant or step.

A step cut is when the diamond has been cut with more of a geometric shape and a brilliant cut is when the diamond has been cut so there is maximum sparkle.

  • The second type is the color of the diamond, from D (no hue) to Z, a yellow – hued diamond. The more colorless, the more valuable the diamond.

  • The third type is the clarity grade of the diamond, scored from IF (flawless) to I3 (heavily included) on a 6 point scale. The higher value of a diamond is directly related to how clean and clear it is.

  • The last type is the diamond’s carat weight, the way diamonds are measured. One carat equals 0.2 grams.

In the End

It really doesn’t matter whether it’s diamond engagement rings or any other kind of jewelry, size counts for something. However if you are actually looking for a very impressive ring you will want a 5 carat diamond. This diamond is sure to get noticed, it’s a stunningly big diamond. Of course, with a diamond that big comes a very large price tag.
