10 Carat Diamond Rings: Your Guide to Quality, Pricing and More

There’s no question you have a 10 carat diamond ring. Unfortunately, it is impossible to miss its truly impressive size, and it sparkles with beauty. In other words — so long as you follow the 4C’s, and the diamond’s color, cut, clarity, and carat size, is excellent!

No doubt about this big diamond having an inherent eye catching matter. But, a diamond this large makes it so much easier for people to spot any flaws if you goof on your purchase of this critical diamond.

So a 10 carat diamond — that's a 10 carat diamond, the largest diamond by itself on the ring. This isn’t 10 carat TCW (total carat weight) — meaning that 10 carat’s worth of diamonds are somewhere in the setting.

Choosing a 10 Carat Diamond

If searching for a 10 carat diamond, we recommend a budget to at least a few diamond shapes to look at. At this price most buyers begin with a minimum budget of $300,000 to about $500,000. The most popular post weights for a 10 carat diamond are Oval, Emerald and Pear Cut.

Cushion cut or radiant cut are also two other types of shape if you are planning for a rectangular shape. All diamonds of 10 carats or larger are unique in their being and the polish or exact dimensions of the cut may alter the overall brightness of the diamond. So we suggest that you compare a few diamonds before you buy.

Type I and Type II Diamonds

Type Ia diamonds with about 95% of diamonds contain trace amounts of nitrogen. Most engagement rings and other diamond jewelry are made from Type Ia diamonds. Intense canary yellow diamonds are commonly associated with Type Ib diamonds and that is why these diamonds are commonly used for jewelry.

Type II diamonds are much less common than Type I diamonds, and Type II diamonds have fewer inclusions and greater clarity.

Diamonds without any measurable amount of nitrogen or boron impurities are called type IIa diamonds. These diamonds are often colorless, but some are seen in rare colors: pink, brown or blue. These are very rare, in fact they are less than 2% of all mined diamonds. Under high pressure and high temperature these diamonds are formed and can give the diamond a higher clarity and brilliance.

Cost of Diamond

The famous 4Cs of diamond valuation—carat, cut, clarity, and color—make up the majority of the price of your 10 carat diamond ring and apply to all diamond rings. This diamond will certainly be an investment at 10 carats.

Cost, quite obviously, the carat is fixed—we’re talking 10 carat diamonds! Cut, is an even more nebulous thing than carat weight, and will actually impact the price of 10-carat diamonds not as much as you think when similar cuts are compared. With that in mind we’ll search for it with the classic round diamonds.

A 10 carat diamond ring: How to get the best value

A typical price for a 10 carat diamond ring (which I assume you intend to buy) is, of course, a premium price. These diamonds are exceedingly rare, just as beautiful, and they cost what they’re worth.

However, some of the grades can save a lot of money if you give priority to a reputable retailer or shop. This means that you’re not going to pay a high price for a low quality diamond, or for grades that no one will notice by just looking.

Here’s what we recommend you look for when shopping for a 10 carat diamond ring:

  • Diamond cut: All this is unless you only buy a diamond with an Excellent (GIA) cut grade for round cut and ideal proportions for other shapes.

  • Diamond color: It also needs to be colorless, or more likely G-I in grade color, and be looked for in the proximity of colorless to the naked eye.

  • Diamond clarity: VS2 – VS1 in clarity, and check the diamond under the lens to be sure it has no obvious inclusions.

  • Diamond shape: pick which shape matches your personal style and your beloved. You'll have more choice round brilliant shapes, but an elongated shape like an oval or marquise diamond can make a diamond look larger and have a bigger face up area.

  • Vendor: For 10 carat diamonds, your best options are James Allen, Blue Nile, Abe Mor or Leibish & Co (for fancy coloured diamonds).

Go Lab-Grown

Lab made or “natural” or mined diamonds have no chemical or physical difference to each other. Yup, none at all! Depending on the one, what you have is mined from the earth or one is made in a lab.

The diamond certification number will even read too fast even for the most skilled jeweler to see what’s on it, which is if the diamond is lab grown or mined.

Since lab grown diamonds are not scarce, they are quite cheaper than the mined diamonds. They also tend to have lower occlusions and greater clarity—important for 10 carat gems.

By selecting a lab-grown diamond, you can score up to 80 percent off with a diamond as large as 10 carats.

Final Thoughts

A 10 carat diamond ring will attract attention wherever it goes. This diamond is so rare it will be many people’s whole lives before they have seen a jewel this rare and beautiful in person. Therefore; 10 carat diamonds are not cheap as the difference in price of low and high grades is often significant.
